The Achieve Sustainable Development Goal No. 5 (ASDG5) initiative supported advocates in designing and implementing strategies to ensure that grassroots women and girls are an integral part of national efforts to implement SDG 5: the global goal on gender equality and women’s empowerment on leadership. The initiative’s model had four parts: (1) Data collection, (2) Capacity- and Coalition-Building, (3) Evidence-based Advocacy Messaging and (4) Amplification.
The AchieveSDG5 was a consortium project implemented by Achieve Sustainable Development Goal 5 Coalition (ASDG5 Coalition) in Tanzania to bring together like-minded organizations in Tanzania to collectively build and implement an advocacy strategy to influence their government’s’ implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal 5 on Gender Equality and Empowerment of All Women and Girls in Tanzania. The ASDG5 Coalition members were Himiza Social Justice, Centre for Information Technology (CIT), Elimu Community Light (ECOLI), Hope for Destitute People’s Foundation (HDPF), Kagera People Cantered Development Foundation (KAPECEDEFO), Tanzania Community-based Option for Protection and Empowerment Organization (TACOPE), Woman Wake-up (WOWAP) and Young Women Christian Association (YWCA).
Initially the project was managed Women Thrive Alliance, based in Washington D.C, USA before it was transferred to Equal Measures 2030 after Women Thrive Alliance closed their organization. The project was funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for a period of two years from, which was November 2017 until December 2019.
SUCCESS: The project trained 160 women on leadership on topics such as who are leaders; corruption in general and the effect of corruption; gender based violence; quality leadership; resources management; culture and customs in leadership; characteristics of leaders; duty and responsibility of a leader; challenges of leadership; steps to follow and techniques in solving leadership problem. At least 70% of the empowered women were able to seek electoral positions in the 2020 general elections.
